Exclusive video: NatWest Group on technology as a business

Jennifer Wood, Director Strategy, Transformation and Architecture, Digital X at NatWest Group, focused on the theme of technology as a business

Held at the QEII Centre in the heart of Westminster, our annual conference, FinTech LIVE London 2023, proved to be a disruptive learning and networking experience.

The two-day event gave leading lights from across the fintech industry an opportunity to showcase their latest strategies, projects and innovations, while attendees soaked up valuable insight and expertise.

On Stage 1, proceedings on the afternoon of day two began with a keynote delivered by Jennifer Wood, Director Strategy, Transformation and Architecture, Digital X at NatWest Group.

Technology as a business

Introducing her speech, focused on the theme of technology as a business, Wood said: "Over the last couple of days we've had really great conversations around fintechs, the changes in the environment and what's different as the world evolves into its next space and use of technology.

"At NatWest we're passionate about innovation, but we come from a very different heritage to some of the people who you've heard talk about technology. And so, what I want to talk about is how we think about technology as a business – as a key part of our organisation."

Outlining the scale of Digital X, the technology vertical at NatWest, Wood added: "Within Digital X we've got 35,000 people, so we, in ourselves, are large.

"I was talking earlier (during the Women in FinTech Forum) about the ability to influence 100 people is fabulous. Once you get to 35,000 people, you have to have the structures and governance of the business, and that creates a different environment for our people.

"The other thing is that we're a highly-regulated industry and, as a large player in that, regulation control is always a factor when we think about the way we run technology."
